New rules for qualifying to London 2012
The International Judo Federation has announced new rules for qualifying to London 2012. The number of competitors in the Judo competition will be 386.
A new World Ranking List will be used to determine the Judokas to participate in the London 2012 games.
Up until Beijing 2008, the qualification was given to the nation. From London 2012, the qualification will go directly to the Judoka. Each nation will send one Judoka per category. If there are 2 Judokas or more from the same nation in a category that make the requirement to qualify, the nation will decide which player will have the starting place.
The places are allocated as follows:
• 14 places reserved to the organising nation (7 men + 7 women)
• 20 places reserved for invitations by the IJF
• 252 places allocated through the World Ranking List
o First 22 men players (from 22 different countries) from the World Ranking in each weight category (22 X 7 = 154)
o First 14 women players (from 14 different countries) from the World Ranking in each weight category (14 X 7 = 98)
• 100 places to be qualified through the continental quota.
o Africa – 14 men, 10 women = total 24 places
o Europe – 14 men, 11 women = total 25 places
o Asia – 12 men, 8 women = total 20 places
o Oceania – 7 men, 3 women = total 10 places
o Pan-America – 13 men, 8 women = total 21 places
To qualify through the continental quota, each Union will create a ranking list using the World Ranking List across all categories and gender, starting from the highest. Following the Union list, each Union will allocate the men and women’s quota, keeping in mind these 2 rules:
- Maximum of 1 Judoka per nation across all categories and gender can qualify through the Union quota.
- Maximum 2 Judokas per category can qualify through the Union quota.
If the Continental Union can’t fill the quota, the remaining places will be returned to the IJF to be re-distributed according to the World Ranking List.
